Mr. Joaquin Hernandez, Principal

I am a proud graduate of MacArthur High School—though not this one. I graduated from Houston MacArthur before heading west to Los Angeles, where I earned a Bachelor of Arts in Fine Arts and Art History from Occidental College and a master’s in educational leadership from Pepperdine University. My journey in education began in the classroom, teaching Kindergarten at the elementary level, ESL English Language Arts and Social Studies in middle school, and Art I and II in high school, 5 years in three very different schools. From there, I transitioned into administration, serving as an Assistant Principal for both middle and high school and then principal, for both middle and high school. Both times serve the same school in both capacities.

My leadership journey expanded further as I served three years as Superintendent of Schools for a small charter district in South Central Los Angeles and then two years as an executive-level administrator with the Los Angeles County Office of Education. These roles gave me a broad perspective on how schools, systems, and policy must align to support student success. After 17 years in California, we returned to Texas in the summer of 2015, but I returned married with two small children. My first 5 years back, I continued my work in a local charter system as an elementary, middle, and high school administrator.

In 2020, I joined NEISD as Principal of Wood Middle School, and the following year I was honored to become Principal of MacArthur High School. The 2025–2026 school year will mark my 6th year in NEISD and my 27th year in education, that is five years in the classroom, more than two decades in school and district leadership, 8 schools, and 6 school districts.

In 2022, my personal and professional lives came together when my oldest daughter enrolled at MacArthur, followed by her brother two years later. Having my own children here has deepened my commitment to ensuring we get it “right” for every Brahma. MacArthur High School is both my professional and personal responsibility, and while the mascots and color schemes may be different from the one, I graduated from, MacArthur is—and always will be—home.

As the campus Principal, it is my duty to cultivate an environment where learning, growth, and opportunity thrive for every student. I take great pride in working alongside our talented faculty and dedicated staff to create a culture that is safe, supportive, and challenging—a place where students are encouraged to dream big, work hard, and discover their full potential. Together, we strive to ensure that every Brahma not only succeeds academically but also grows as a leader, a thinker, and a valued member of our community.

Ms. Sarah Alecozay, Director

I’m Sarah Alecozay, Director of MacUNITED Early College High School and the Institute of Cybersecurity and Innovation (iCSI), and I also support the Career and Technical Education Center (CTEC). I bring more than 16 years of experience in education and educational leadership, with a passion for expanding opportunities that prepare students for college, careers, and life. I believe every student deserves access to innovative, high-quality learning experiences that build confidence, develop leadership, and connect classroom learning to real-world success.

My educational journey began in San Antonio, where I graduated from Madison High School in NEISD. My career began as a secondary English and science teacher in Sierra Leone with the United States Peace Corps, followed by teaching experiences in San Antonio and Niamey, Niger.

As the mother of three children who attend NEISD schools, I have a deep personal investment in the success of our district and community. Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my three children, running local trails, and traveling to new places with my family. It is a privilege to serve the students, families, and staff across all programs of NEISD.

Sarah Roe, MPL

As the Magnet Program Leader for Career and Technical Education Center (CTEC), my passion is helping students master real-world skills and confidently launch their professional futures. I am thrilled to support our dedicated faculty of industry experts and champion our students as they unlock their potential. 

My professional journey is deeply rooted right here in NEISD. Over more than two decades, I have served our district as a history teacher, coach, instructional leader, and campus administrator. My time includes 13 years as an assistant principal at both Ed White and Harris Middle Schools. Throughout my career, I have loved supporting students and teachers to fulfill their dreams and goals.  

Outside of school, I love being out in nature, whether I am kayaking, motorcycling, traveling, or attending sporting events. Most of all, I enjoy going on adventures with my family and our dogs, and we are absolutely thrilled to be welcoming our first grandbaby this year! I look forward to serving the CTEC community with dedication and joy!

Mrs. Michelle Smiley, CAP

I am honored to serve the MacArthur High School community as the Curriculum and Instruction Assistant Principal. My leadership is grounded in collaboration, high expectations, and the belief that strong instructional systems create opportunities for every student to succeed. I am committed to supporting teachers, strengthening instruction, and building sustainable systems that promote accountability, continuous improvement, and student achievement.

I bring 11 years of experience in education, including teaching high school English Language Arts and English as a Second Language and serving as an administrator at both the middle and high school levels.

This is my 5th year at MacArthur, and my connection to the campus is both professional and personal. As the parent of a student in MacArthur’s Early College High School program, I am deeply invested in this community. I am proud to work alongside our students, staff, and families to prepare every Brahma for success as they move into college, career, or military service.
